When we decorate our homes, the bedroom is often the last room we decide to fix up. Private and tucked away from prying eyes, it's easy to forget about the boudoir when the rooms we frequently entertain in are in desperate need of a makeover.

That's one hell of a mistake. Our bedrooms are where we go to relax, unwind, and let go of the stresses of day to day life. How can we do that if our surrounding environment is dingy, dusty and depressing? Thankfully, giving your bedroom a serious overhaul is both easy AND inexpensive. Just look at these five incredible transformations. They prove that, when it comes to bedrooms, anything is possible!

#1 before—a dingy disaster

What a state! This bloody awful bedroom looked like it hadn't been decorated—or even cleaned—since the late 80's. Shabby plaid curtains hung raggedly from the tired old rail, their awfulness exacerbated by the scruffy lace curtains that were haphazardly strung up to shield the room from public view—and for good reason!

The furnishing is even worse. The broken lamp shoved in the corner is only beaten in the embarrassing home decor stakes by the stained mattress bed thrown on the floor and the other one propped up against a chest of drawers. A low-hanging pendant light hangs in the centre of the room—high design this is not. Let's see how the designers at Better Home remedied this disaster zone…

#1 after—light, bright and white!

If it wasn't for those distinctive windows, you would never believe this was the same room. A fresh coat of paint and a gleaming white decor scheme have opened this bedroom up, making it feel spacious, serene, and above all… CLEAN!

Those crap curtains have been replaced by breezy white linen drapes, matching the high-quality bed linen on the taupe double bed. A tasteful modern art print adds personality and class, while the rest of the furniture is kept to a minimum. Even that hideous radiator doesn't look too bad in this newly-renovated haven.

#2 before—almost certainly a crack den

This small bedroom with a slanted ceiling is full of wasted potential. Those sturdy beams could be scrubbed up and buffed into a rustic dream, that cute shuttered window could be emphasised, and there's plenty of hidden storage space in the nooks and crannies.

Sadly, the only attempt to liven up this space fell flat on its face—whoever thought tacking a series of cheap square mirrors onto an otherwise bare wall would be a good idea?! This looks like a depressing student accomodation—or worse…

#2 after—zingy and modern

But not anymore! Thanks to the team at Inuk Home Studio, this tiny treat of a bedroom has been given a new lease of life. That beautiful window has been picked out in a vibrant mint green, providing a striking focal point and a guideline colour scheme.

En vogue copper desk lamps, positioned neatly on matching vintage wall shelves, frame each side of the three quarter width bed. Cute retro prints are stuck up on the wall, providing further symmetry to this wonky bedroom. The beams have been buffed up too!

#3 before—what the hell is that wallpaper about?

Is this a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, or a horribly misguided combination of all three?

Does that rock-hard mattress even count as a bed? Why is there a sink and kitchen appliance bunged in the corner? Why haven't those floorboards been cleaned in the last decade, and WHAT THE HELL IS THAT WALLPAPER? These are all questions that need to be answered, and then remedied…

#3 after—pastels and productivity

WOW. The designers at Oua did a truly commendable job, especially considering the spatial and logistical restraints they were working with. What was once a box room suffering a severe style hemorrhage is now a student's dream bedroom!

That awkward little vanity is still there, but now its function has been combined with a small, foldaway writing desk. The new bed is tucked in the corner, with roll-out storage underneath and fashionable grey and white bed linen. Best of all is the inclusion of the little lavender plant in the corner—just perfect for lulling sleepy bookworms to sleep.

#4 before—hugely underwhelming

This isn't the worst bedroom on our list by any means, but it's definitely uninspiring. Blerghy beige walls, a bog-standard paper lantern, and shoddy accent furniture really drag the tone of the space into the doldrums. The clutter, too, is just nauseating. A disorganised clothes rail, opened toiletry boxes and a functional but hardly pretty fan make the room look tired and thoughtless.

In fact, the only saving grace is that ornate bed. Let's see if they managed to retain it…

#4 after—an affordable yet effective transformation!

This really couldn't be any further away from the bland nightmare we first saw! Colour, pattern and personality reign supreme in this eclectic boudoir. Black and white striped wallpaper, embellished with whimsical flowers and creatures, brings an almost gothic Parisian vibe, which is complemented by the antique wooden bed—we're so glad they kept it!

Aside from these old-world touches, the rest of the decor is kept contemporary, modern, and almost Scandinavian. Simple bedside tables sit either side of the bed, while Ikea-esque yellow and blue cushions and light fixtures tie the room together with a coherent colour scheme.

#5 before—just awful, really

One final home, one final horror. This dark and depressing bedroom isn't quite a ruin, but it's definitely seen better days.

Mismatching furniture and a whole lotta junk crowds the space, making it look more like a forgotten box room than a relaxing space of repose. How did they fix it? Let's find out…

#5 after—a crisp contemporary sleeping space

Now that's more like it! Enlarged windows let an abundance of light into the space. Crisp white sheets and barely there grey walls create a neutral base for the pops of colour scattered around the room. Patterns and textures creep in, but never intrude on the relaxing ambience. It's the perfect penthouse hideaway for stylish urbanites.
