Sometimes, our homes can be a bit overwhelming. What should be a place of retreat and contentment sometimes feels congested with unnecessary items, sometimes styles are tested out and then promptly abandoned, and projects started but never completed.

While a good Spring cleaning–whenever that happens to be–is always welcome, sometimes you want to go that extra mile and streamline your style, too. If this is hitting close to home, then keep reading for a few tips on how you can simplify your home's style.

1. Think about your individual style

Before we even begin, it's important to think about your own individual style. Think about the design scheme you have going on now, what you like in decor, and how you could change things without affecting your in-use design.

Unless, of course, you're looking to completely revamp your home. If that's the case, you might be interested in browsing through these home makeovers!

2. Pick what's really important

The next step is to decide what you really need to hold on to and what you can let go. If something holds particular sentimental value, chances are you're going to want to keep that–which is more than okay.

The goal of this tip is to identify what you absolutely don't need. Maybe six pictures of your dog over your couch is a bit much. Take three of those and move them to a less crowded space.

3. Less is more–go minimal

When trying to achieve a simpler home design, there's no better design scheme than minimalist. Minimalist decor isn't just black and white with sleek modern furniture–any home can be minimalist, whatever the style is.

It's about a space that provides you with everything you need, with the added perk of not having items weighing you down.

4. Nothing under foot

A big part of keeping a simple home design is keeping things off the floor. The less you have on the floor, the less you have to move around when walking.

You might also find that disposing of your large laundry basket in the bathroom makes room for a nice bench to sit on while doing your morning makeup.

5. Work with a goal in mind

As with any job, you have to have a clear goal in mind when you start. It does no good to have the mindset of well, let's just see where this goes and expect a simpler home design.

Even if your goals aren't crystal clear, have a rough idea of where you would like to place everything, what areas of the home need the most improvement or which areas need the most upkeep.

6. Keep away the clutter

If you're anything like us, you throw your clothes, purse, and shoes on the ground after a long day and forget about them until the next day. That's all when and fine if you're living in a bachelor pad with no rules and no visitors, but for the average person, this simply won't do.

Keeping clutter away is essential when simplifying your home's style. Setting up an organisational system will really do wonders for your home. Having an organiser like the one we see here will help you get your clutter off the floor and keep it off the floor.

7. Rearrange your furniture

In order to achieve a simpler home design, you may have to rearrange some furniture. Perhaps your sofa isn't in the ideal spot for watching TV, or you feel that your coffee table is getting in the way of things. Even if you're not sure exactly what it is that's off about your setup, try rearranging some things anyway. You might find that your television is best viewed away from your window, where the glare can't affect viewing, or that your armchair is less in the way when you move it against a wall. The main goal in this endeavor would be to create a more open space in the end for a freer flow of energy and a simpler design.

8. Maintain clean surfaces

It goes without saying that clean surfaces make happy homeowners, but the problem generally isn't the cleaning itself–it's maintaining those clean surfaces that tends to be an issue.

Keeping these surfaces free of dust and unnecessary items will leave your house with an overall simpler and freer vibe.

9. Keep it simple in the bedroom

The bedroom is the room in the home that we should pay particular styling attention to. Because we sleep in this room, it's very important to maintain a simple and calming atmosphere.

Just like in the other rooms, you'll want to keep surfaces relatively free here and implement minimal styling. Just a few paintings above the bed, or a knick-knack here and there is the perfect amount of decoration.

10. Make it cosy

Our last point, but certainly not the least important, has to do with the comfiness factor of your home. The home is all about comfort and ease. You shouldn't feel any of the day's stresses when you step into your home after a long day at work, and plush textiles are a simple way to combat that feeling. Making sure there are enough soft furnishings ensures that comfort is never too far away.
