When it comes to designing the bedroom there are all sorts of priorities to get in order. For starters it should be an intimate space, one that reflects your personality and mirrors your own tastes and preferences. It should also be a practical space, with plenty of storage so that it doesn't end up being cluttered or awkward. But perhaps the most important consideration is that it should be a relaxing space. After a hard day, when all you can think about is falling into a cosy bed, you want an environment that puts your mind and body at ease.

While a comfy bed certainly helps, the decor of your room has a huge psychological impact, with different colours evoking different emotions and ideas. That's why today we're looking at some of the most relaxing colours you can paint your bedroom, colours that will release stress and promote wellbeing and tranquility. So whether you're designing a new home, or you think it's time for a change in your decor, join us as we explore the best colours you can choose for your bedroom.

1. Light lilac

Lilac is similar to lavender, but with a greyer hue. It has a slightly melancholy tone that promotes reflection, so you may want to contrast it with some bright details, like the yellow flowers on the bedside table.

2. Zinc

Zinc is a very gentle shade of grey that includes a lot of white, giving it more of a pearly appearance than more neutral greys. This means that it can be combined effectively with other colours, as we can see with the gold touches in this bedroom, but it also has the integrity to stand on its own.

3. Lavender

Lavender is not only a relaxing scent, but also a gorgeous colour that works well with with greys, blues and purples, creating a cool and calming aesthetic. Slightly lighter than violet it is perfect for charming decors like this elegant room.

4. Sand

Sand is essentially a light brown with yellowish hues, but like its namesake there's a lot of variation. Its organic tone works really well with timber and wicker elements, and contrasts beautifully with ocean blues, creating a seaside aesthetic that will make you feel like you're on a permanent holiday!

5. Mauve

Sometimes colours can be suggested by combining various tones, such as this purple bedspread against the slightly more grey wall that creates a pastel mauve impression that is sophisticated yet sweet. 6. Mint

Like lavender, mint has the added benefit that it invokes a full sensory experience related to the aromatic herb. There's nothing more refreshing on a hot summer's day than a mint cocktail, and a mint decor will have the same effect!

7. Indigo

Indigo is a mystical colour, sometimes related to the third eye, making it the perfect colour for promoting inner knowledge and acceptance. It is also a stunning a shade of deep blue that will add depth and character to your decor.

8. Cyan

Cyan is a saturated light blue that will remind you of crystal clear water, the most relaxing of all of the elements. It combines well with almost every bright colour, as you can see here with the rainbow blanket, making it perfect for fun loving creative types who like eccentric decors.

9. Turquoise

Turquoise is a serene colour inspired by the gem of the same name made up of roughly 70 per cent blue and 30 per cent green. Like all gem colours it has a sense of opulence, but that is offset by its cool oceanic tone. Turquoise is a complex colour, meaning it is likely to clash with brighter tones, and is better matched with neutral colours like they have here, although that pot plant shows that it also looks amazing with other greens or blues.

10. Red wine

Red wine is a rich and sumptuous colour, making it a super cosy colour for the bedroom, but in its lighter shades its also a calming. It's important not to overdo it, as it can make the room a little dark, so it's better suited to feature walls with a lighter base colour for the rest of the decor.

With any of these colours you can be sure of sweet dreams and a good night's sleep! For more helpful tips on your interior decor look at all of these creative ways to use curtains!
