Most of the time, staying in a fancy hotel isn’t about the delicious food or the beautiful views from the window/balcony – it’s about the bedroom. That crisp, freshly laundered, clutter-free bedroom that immediately relaxes one upon entering.

Yes, there are definitely secrets that the hotel industry uses to turn ordinary sleeping spaces into luxury bedrooms (and it’s not the room service). And fortunately, we know what they are, meaning anybody willing to commit to a bit of effort and creativity can turn their bedroom into a dream sleeping space.

Care to know what they are? Of course you do…

1. The look of luxury bedrooms: No clutter

Before you buy or move anything, you first need to get rid of something to achieve the look that all luxury bedrooms share: the clutter. You never see gorgeous bedrooms in five-star hotels (or on Pinterest, or here on homify) in a dishevelled state, do you? That’s because no matter how much you spend on fancy sheets or fabulous furnishings, a dirty or cluttered bedroom will never look expensive.

So, first of all, get to work on removing unnecessary pieces like exercise equipment, stacks of unread books, folded clothing, etc.

2. The look of luxury bedrooms: Fresh bed linen

A deluxe sleeping space is more than a snug mattress – it also features freshly laundered sheets that are clean and pressed.

But forget about thread count when you go shopping for sheets. Instead, touch and feel the quality of the fabric. To enhance that feeling of luxuriousness, iron with some DIY linen spray kissed with lavender or rose essential oils – you won’t believe the difference it will make to your bed and your nightly sleep.

Drop a few capfuls of vodka into a pint-sized spray bottle of distilled water. Add 20 drops of essential oil. Ta-da!

3. The look of luxury bedrooms: Fresh foliage

All luxury bedrooms have a touch of Mother Nature’s freshness in them. To make this work, get your prettiest vase and fill it with a fragrant bouquet of cut flowers. Place it on your nightstand or a credenza. Or even a beautiful pot with plants in the corner can also do the trick.

homify hint: The best plants to promote sleep? Jasmine, Lavender, Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue), Aloe Vera, Spider Plant, Valerian, English Ivy, and Peace Lily.

4. The look of luxury bedrooms: A peaceful colour palette

We don’t judge anybody who loves bold red splashes on their bedroom walls, but eye-catching colours are not what luxury bedrooms are about. A neutral colour palette is key for creating a calm, serene sense of mind.

Think of hues like pale blues, soft beiges, creamy whites, light greys, etc. But don’t just use these for the walls. Let the drapery and upholstery work together to create a peaceful sleeping space.

5. The look of luxury bedrooms: The right light

Ditch the cheap downlighters and hang some stylish pendants / a chandelier instead. Just keep the height of your bedroom’s ceiling in mind. And make sure that the light is in scale to the rest of the room and complements your other furnishings.

homify hint: Chances are great that those ready-made lamps you picked at the furniture store came with basic, uninspired shades. So, upgrade them to make a fabulous impact. Opt for another colour (keep your neutral palette in mind) or a cool fabric with an enticing motif. And a shade that’s slightly taller can definitely become more prominent.

6. The look of luxury bedrooms: Be clever with blankets

That elegant bedroom you’re styling up must also seem warm and inviting, which brings us to textiles. But forget about that cheap, microfleece number that you use for cuddling on the sofa – it won’t make your bedroom look elegant.

Instead, go with a throw blanket made from fuzzy wool, velour, silk, velvet or even faux fur. Pattern-wise, stick to a solid colour, an animal print or a subtle design.

7. The look of luxury bedrooms: Add impact

Every room deserves one special item that stands out. It might be a large piece of artwork, a stunning headboard, a fine collectible on the dresser, or even a rug adding some colour/pattern to your floor space. Whatever you choose, let it reflect your personal taste and style, and make sure it’s large enough to be seen immediately upon entering the room.

8. The look of luxury bedrooms: Window treatment that wow

When it comes to turning a small bedroom into an expensive-looking space, one needs to fake it to make it. And that includes raising the curtains up high to make the room look bigger.

When the curtain rod is mounted just about 2 – 4cm below the ceiling line, and the drapes hang to the floor, your entire bedroom suddenly looks bigger and more elegant. You’re welcome!

9. The look of luxury bedrooms: Stunning hardware

If your bedroom was updated five trends/years ago, chances are great that those hardware pieces could do with a new look. Thus, replace those dated, ugly or plain drawer pulls and knobs with contemporary, elegant designs.

In your search for new pieces, look for glass or metal hardware that are striking without being tacky. Simply screw it into place, and voila! Just keep your bedroom’s overall design (i.e. modern, Scandinavian, colonial) in mind – those hardware pieces need to complement, not clash!
