Top 3 ways to prevent plumbing nightmares

Problems with plumbing may appear anytime. A few days back I shifted to a new house. The house was in excellent condition. At night after making the kitchen functional, I decided to cook some food at home. Soon I discovered the drain pipe of the sink was choking. Moreover, soon the sink filled with water. Now, what to do? I tried all I could with a thin steel rod. I poured boiling water in the sink as well, but no use. I had no other option as I could not call a plumber now. Next morning I called the plumber who fixed the clogging drain. After this incident, I learned few tricks to tackle the situation. Now, I am going to discuss the plumbing problems and some preventive measures.

Clogging kitchen drains

This is the most common problem of almost every other house. Same happened with my kitchen. When we wash greasy pots and pans, all the grease hardens and clogs the drain pipe. Waste food particles that we throw in the sink while washing also gets stuck in the drain pipe and make it clog. To avoid this situation use a thin screen on the opening of drain pipe in the sink. It will prevent any solid item getting into the drain pipe. Best the thing is to dispose waste materials in plates, pans or pots in a separate bag before washing them in the sink. Same thing goes with greasy pans. Wipe extra grease off them in the waste bag before washing them. In this way, grease will not get into the drain and clog the pipe. You can apply a simple home remedy for opening the clogged drains. At night sprinkle ¼ cup of baking soda in drain pipe of the sink. Pour a little amount of hot water, so baking soda settles in drain and sink. Then pour a cup of synthetic white vinegar over it and leave it for overnight. Soda and vinegar mixture will dissolve all the scum in the drain. In the morning flush the drain with lots of boiling water. Follow this procedure twice a month and drain pipe of your kitchen will never choke.

Maintenance check on toilets

There is a rubber flapper in the toilet tanks that opens and closes to release water during the flush. It usually gets out of order, and there the leakage of water begins. To confirm your leaky toilet put some ink drops in the tank at night. If you see some color in the bowl next morning, then it is confirmed that your toilet is leaking. You will have to change to the flapper. The flush tank may get dirty due to metal stains, bacteria, and mold. If you do not clean it on a regular basis, then dirty water will enter the bowl making it difficult to clean. The commode also needs a deep cleaning. Wash the toilet with soda and vinegar solution once a month. This action will prevent from many plumbing issues.

Over tightening of faucets

Some people are in the habit of tightening the faucet to avoid leakage of water. However, over tightening may make the faucets lose, resulting in leakage of water. For leaky taps, you will have to change the washer or in extreme case install a new tap. To avoid too much leakage or flooding of water, you should know about the main shut off valve. Close the main valve immediately to prevent water flooding the house. You can solve some problems at earlier stages to avoid a disastrous situation. Before attempting any operation you should have some basic equipment and knowledge, so, you can tackle the situation before a plumber comes.
