Major alteration and extension to a small, double storey house on a steep site, set below street level with difficult access. Cost effectively retaining much of the existing structure, we added an additional floor comprising open plan living and master bedroom and triple garaging above with new entrance at street level. A lift shaft and light-filled staircase with panoramic sea and mountain views connects the floors.
At ground floor level, the original living areas were reconfigured into an entertainment room with bar opening onto the pool deck, a WC and laundry and a guest/staff flatlet with separate access. A generous pool deck and level lawn area wrap around the pool and connect to a wind sheltered boma with fire pit and braai area for flexible entertaining.
Three large water tanks, buried and neatly concealed under cedar cladding, harvest rainwater from the roofs for irrigation and topping up the pool.
At first floor level, the original garage was incorporated to create three better proportioned bedrooms and bathrooms. The original staircase was retained to connect the lower two floors and extended at half landing to a spectacular sea-facing gym.
The new second floor has a wonderful open plan living area extending seamlessly onto a large covered terrace with elevated, uninterrupted sea views on one side and a private, terraced garden with mountain views on the other. This level also features the master bedroom with its own private terrace and dramatic, cantilevered, glass fronted pool.
